Despite the inclement weather earlier in the day, thousands tread through muck and mush to kick off the first day of LEVITATION. Some wore rain boots to avoid the muddy conditions, while others donned white sneakers, flip flops, or nothing at all. Our trusty Doc Martens got us through the day, but were quite textured by the end.

First we saw Mini Mansions, an Indie Pop band founded by ex Queens of the Stone Age bassist, Michael Shuman. Being huge QOTSA fans here at Stray Wavs, we were stoked for their performance.

Next we caught DIIV, who has a special place in our hearts for being Brooklyn natives, wowed us with their dream pop grooves that were somehow a bit reminiscent of The Cure, and their emotive stage presence.

We also caught hometown heroes, The Sword, who never fail to deliver the finest doom metal that should always be appropriately enjoyed copious bong rips.

Finally, a band that we’ve been chasing for the past year and could never line our schedule with, METZ. Hailing from Toronto, Canada, this Sub Pop-signed noise-rock band definitely capped off the evening just right with their big sound and wild energy; provoking a memorable mud-slinging mosh pit.

We hope you enjoyed the first day of the fest, and will see you out at the ranch today for Thee Oh Sees, The Jesus & Mary Chain, Earth, This Will Destroy You, and more. Check the schedule here.

p.s. If you are getting cell service at the fest, let us Tinder from your phone!

Bass Drum of Death at Red 7

February 11, 2015

Last Monday, February 9th, I had the pleasure of finally catching Mississippi natives, Bass Drum of Death!

This garage-rock powerhouse, featuring two guitars and a drummer, slayed an eager crowd at Austin’s own Red 7 with their fuzzed-out riffs and catchy vocal melodies¬†and there was no shortage of dancing, singing, and crowd surfing!

I was also lucky enough to design the poster for this show:

Check them out on the rest of their tour and get fuzzy!
